Frequently Asked Questions
Project Environments & Workflow Management
What are environments in Hygraph and why are they important?
Environments in Hygraph allow you to safely work on isolated instances of your project. They enable you to make changes to your schema and test new content structures without affecting your production systems. This helps teams manage content creation and approval in a clear and structured way. Note: Environments are best suited for teams needing to test changes before deploying to production; limitations include that some elements (users, roles, permissions, permanent auth tokens, billing) are not cloned between environments.
How do I create a new environment in Hygraph?
To create a new environment, navigate to the Project Settings tab in your Hygraph project, select Environments under general settings, and click the Clone button on the Master Environment card. Fill in the display name, endpoint alias, description, and choose whether to clone content and webhooks. Note: Users, roles, permissions, permanent auth tokens, and billing will not be cloned between projects. For detailed steps, see Hygraph documentation.
What happens to asset URLs when cloning environments in Hygraph?
When you clone an environment, asset URLs change. With the new Hygraph Asset Management System, only the base URL changes on cloned environments, while the asset ID remains the same. You can search for the old asset environment ID and replace it with the new one. Note: Asset URLs stored in source code or external systems must be updated after cloning. For more details, see Hygraph documentation.
How do I switch between environments in Hygraph?
To switch environments, you must have at least two environments. Click the switch dropdown in your Hygraph top bar and select the environment you want to switch to. Note: Switching environments is only possible when multiple environments exist.
How do I promote an environment to master in Hygraph?
To promote an environment to master, you must have at least two environments. Click the 'Promote to master' link in the environment card, provide a new display name and API ID for the current master environment being replaced, and confirm the promotion. Note: Promoting environments is only possible when multiple environments exist.
How do I delete an environment in Hygraph?
To delete an environment, you must have at least two environments. Click the 'Delete' link in the environment card, confirm your choice by clicking the 'Delete environment' button. A warning will display to ensure you do not delete by mistake. Note: Deleting environments is only possible when multiple environments exist.
