Introduction
Headquartered in Sweden, Voi is a shared electric micromobility company that aims to create safe, sustainable, and reliable micromobility for everyone. Voi operates across twelve countries—translating its content into ten languages to cater to a diverse, multi-regional audience.
The micromobility industry is becoming increasingly regulated, with a growing emphasis on safety and rider education. Recognizing this shift, the Voi team identified the need for a flexible and scalable content management system to deliver practical, accessible, and hyper-local information and rider education across Voi's web-based platforms.
The Challenge
Voi saw an opportunity to drive conversions and improve cost efficiency by addressing limitations in content customization, lengthy update processes, and third-party dependencies for integrations
Limited flexibility in content management and rising costs
Voi’s reliance on their agency and the content management system they worked with started to slow them down—customizing the website and other web properties often required additional costs and extended planning timelines, making it challenging to implement changes quickly and efficiently.
Managing ten languages across twelve countries turned out to be resource-intensive. Since there were many complex templates, anything other than copy changes tended to become projects with extended timelines because design changes or integrations needed the agency's support.
As the Product Manager overseeing Voi's web team, Aldona explained, "If we wanted to change even something as simple as a chatbot script, we had to go through the agency. These smaller updates prompted us to consider the associated costs and explore whether managing them in-house could be a more cost-efficient approach.”
Veronica, Senior Software Engineer at Voi, explained, “We needed a mature CMS to support features like Single Sign-On (SSO) and other enterprise capabilities. We looked at several options, but some required too much technical effort to get them up and running. We wanted something we could set up and start using right away.”
The Solution
Why Hygraph?
Even though Voi evaluated several other content management systems before Hygraph, the team realized many would require a lot of development time to set up and maintain. Hygraph stood out for its balance of flexibility, editor friendliness, scalable permissions, and architectural support for multiple locales.
Scalability with Hygraph
Since Hygraph easily accommodated the need to manage content across multiple regions and languages, short-term scalability was a standout advantage.
Preventing costly fixes
Hygraph's custom roles and granular permission settings ensure that only the right users can create, edit, and publish content. With access strictly controlled, accidental mistakes that would be costly to fix are easy to avoid.
Intuitive editor experience
Hygraph’s robust editor experience allowed Veronica to build modular components, which then helped the content team independently manage content. 'It was a game-changer for us— Hygraph gave us the control we needed without the overhead of constant development tweaks.'
Implementation: Migrating with Minimal Downtime
It took the Voi team one to two months to migrate from WordPress to Hygraph.
They began by independently building the new website structure, powering it through their backend, before migrating content into Hygraph. The API migration from WordPress to Hygraph was straightforward, with blog posts and static pages going smoothly.
Once the Voi team got the core site up and running, they focused on RideSafe, the online traffic learning school content. The old platform was hard-coded, so content updates required a developer's involvement. With Hygraph, Voi could finally simplify content management for RideSafe, making it faster for the brand team to localise content for different regions and publish it.
The Results
With Hygraph, Voi not only doubled their website traffic but also reduced maintenance costs by 50% within weeks of migrating
More Website Traffic and Less Maintenance Costs
Right after migration, Voi saw significant improvement.
Website traffic doubled, and Voi spent half as little on maintaining their web properties because they no longer needed as much support from agencies and external suppliers. "We can make small and big changes smoothly, efficiently, and precisely how we want them," Aldona explained.
The team also found it much easier to roll out new courses and modules for RideSafe Academy, their online learning platform. In the past, launching content in a new language could take weeks. This estimate vastly improved with Hygraph’s integration with Lokalise; that process is down to just under two weeks. "We can push updates live in multiple languages almost at the same time," Margarita, Senior Brand Manager, said.
With Hygraph, Voi can go from idea to implementation in just a few weeks, thanks to the user-friendly and intuitive interface. Consequently, with minimal intervention from the product team, Margarita’s brand team owns content updates end-to-end, empowering them with a sense of control and ownership over their work.
Faster Localisation
Voi has streamlined the localisation process with Hygraph, helping the brand stay consistent across its operating regions.
Within two weeks, the team could put a new offer page live and test it in all the languages they supported. They were also able to track the performance of these pages. Voi’s team has learned they can quickly test and validate ideas before scaling them.
Integrating Lokalise with Hygraph (as easy as clicking a few buttons) has helped them work in a unified system, simplifying workflows and improving Voi’s ability to maintain high-quality, region-specific content.
Next Steps: Expanding Hygraph to Voi’s Support Portal
Building on their initial success, the Voi team is exploring the possibility of moving their customer support/knowledge base into Hygraph. This would allow the support team to manage FAQs independently, using the same modular components already used in other parts of the website.
"We want to streamline the customer support experience," Aldona mentioned. "The goal is to create a seamless and consistent brand experience across all user touchpoints."
Conclusion
Switching to Hygraph has given Voi more control over its multi-regional content while lowering costs. Hygraph has also made it easier for Voi to adapt and scale its content strategy and meet the demands of a growing, diverse audience. As Voi expands, Hygraph provides a robust foundation to support all its content goals—now and in the future.
