Frequently Asked Questions

Project Sharing & Project Cloning

What is Project Sharing in Hygraph and how does it work?

Project Sharing in Hygraph allows you to generate a custom link to share your project as a template with other Hygraph users. Shared projects always include your schema, public API permissions, and tokens. You can also choose to include content, assets, and webhooks. Recipients can clone your project into their own Hygraph account using the shared link. Note: Only the elements you select are included in the shared template; sensitive or private data should be excluded as needed. Read the documentation for details.

How is Project Cloning different from Project Sharing in Hygraph?

Project Cloning allows you to duplicate your own Hygraph project, creating a 1-to-1 copy within your account, including all schemas, content, assets, webhooks, and permissions. Project Sharing extends this by letting you generate a public link so other Hygraph users can clone your project as a template into their own accounts. Note: Project Cloning is for your own use; Project Sharing is for distributing templates to others. Learn more.

What elements are included when I share or clone a Hygraph project?

When you share or clone a Hygraph project, the schema, public API permissions, and tokens are always included. You can also choose to include content, assets, and webhooks. For Project Cloning, all elements are duplicated for your own use. For Project Sharing, you control which elements are included in the shared template. Note: Private or sensitive data should be excluded before sharing a template publicly.

How do I generate a public link or sharing button for my Hygraph project?

To generate a public link for Project Sharing, use the sharing feature in your Hygraph project settings. You can create a link or generate a sharing button in Markdown or HTML, which can be embedded on a website or other frontend. This allows other Hygraph users to clone your project as a template. Note: Only users with a Hygraph account can use the shared link to clone the project. See documentation.

This is an extension of the original Project Cloning feature which allows users to duplicate their original project, creating a 1-to-1 copy within their own Hygraph account.

However, with Project Sharing, you can generate a custom link to share your project(s) as a template with other Hygraph users outside of their individual projects. Shared projects always include your schema, public API permissions, and tokens. You have the choice to also include content, assets, and webhooks.

#How to use Project Cloning

The cloning ability is found within your Hygraph project settings.

To clone a project for your own purposes, find the button under 'Clone Project'. Cloned projects include all of your schemas, content, assets, webhooks, and permissions.

#Sharing Projects

Building upon this, we are also introducing Project Sharing, giving you the ability to create public links to let others clone your project into their Hygraph account.

Project Sharing allows you to easily generate a link that can be given to any other Hygraph user. You have the option to generate a sharing button in Markdown or HTML. Embed this button on a website or other frontend, giving others the ability to clone your project to use as a template.

Here is an example of sharing a project using a button for our recently announced Docs Starter.
